GERD is a condition in which during digestion process, acid from stomach flows backward up into esophagus. Heart burn may occur if excessive amounts of acid reflux enter esophagus. Gerd in later stage if left untreated it may cause damage to esophagus. You should be careful in choosing foods while suffering with gerd as some foods may aggravate acid reflux or some foods may irritate inflamed lower esophagus.

Dietary guidelines:

  • Eat small frequent meals.
  • Less than 300 mg of cholesterol a day.
  • Intake of sodium should not be more than 2400mg.
  • Avoid eating large meals before sleeping.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.

Foods to avoid in GERD:

  • Spicy foods
  • Fried foods
  • High fat foods
  • Pepper
  • Vinegar
  • Mustard
  • Citrus fruits and juices
  • Coffee
  • Sot drinks
  • Peppermint
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Tomatoes
  • Whole milk
  • Sausage
  • Bacon
  • Choclates
  • Sweets

Foods to eat:

  • Fruits:  Apples, pears, Bananas, watermelon
  • Milk : low fat milk and low fat milk products
  • Fats: very low amount of fats can be used
  • Soups: fat free or low fat soups
  • Lean meats
