Eye Care » Ways to keep eye healthy

Proper care of eyes should be an habit for every one. One should always have an alert to resolve eye problems and eyesight difficulties right away. The eyes need to be protected from excessive heat, dust, wind, sunlight and other environmental factors.

To overcome these issues, one should follow the simple steps as given below that can improve eye health or minimize severity.

• Wash eyes with cold water 2-3 times daily.

• Wear sunglasses to protect eyes from harmful rays, dust etc.

• Keep slices of potato or cucumber over eyes to treat dark circles.

• Put tea bags over eyes to reduce eye swelling.

• Drink plenty of water every day.

• Soak amla overnight in water and use this water to wash eyes in the next morning.

• Soak cotton in luke warm milk and cover eyes for 15 min.

• Soak cotton pads in chilled milk and cover eyes for 10 minutes.

• Eye make up should be removed before sleeping.

• Practice eye exercise like rolling, blinking etc.

• Massage the scalp with curd, to avoid eye infections.

• Avoid wearing of lens for longer time.

• Avoid rubbing of eyes.

• Maintain healthy diet rich of ‘vitamin A’ such as papaya, orange, spinach, eggs, carrot, fish, milk, tomato etc.

• Apply grated potato on eyelids for 20 minutes, to treat puffiness.

• Quit smoking.

• Avoid drinking alcohol.

• Go for regular sleep (7-8 hours).

• Schedule yearly checkups to ophthalmologist.

• Immediate visit to an ophthalmologist, in case of diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and glaucoma.
