The cold is an acute, self-limited viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. There are many viral pathogens which can cause the symptoms of the common cold; the most common are the more than 100 serotypes of rhinoviruses (picornaviruses) or corona viruses. Infants and children are affected more often than adults. As the infection is usually mild and resolves within a short time period.
