Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is also known as Heartburn. The lower intestinal sphincter (LES) is a band of muscle fibers present in the bottom of esophagus. If the LES fail to close properly the contents of stomach rise up in the esophagus. Along with the food in the stomach the acidic juices secreted also rises up it is called as acid reflux or acid regurgitation. Occasionally Gastroesophageal reflux is common and does not mean the existence of the disease.
