Diseases » Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is common chronic disease that leads to inflammation of large intestine (colon) which includes characteristic ulcers, bleeding, diarrhea and open sores. It is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Colon is the part of the digestive system where waste material is stored.

If the inflammation occurs,

• In rectum or lower part of colon it is called ulcerative proctitis,

• If the entire colon is affected then it is called as pancolitis,

• If only left side of the colon is affected it is called as distal colitis.

Ulcerative colitis can occur in both men and women.Usually it starts between 15-30 years and less frequently between 50-70 years of age and it reports that 20% of the people having this disease have a family member with UC or Crohn’s disease another form of IBD. Higher incidence of this condition is seen in whites and Jewish descents.
