Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, occurs when the human body fails to produce or properly uses insulin which is required to metabolize sugar into energy. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by constant elevated levels of blood glucose. Human body has to control Blood glucose level to a very narrow range for this insulin and glucagons are necessary.

Types:

There are three main types of diabetes

Type 1: Type 1 is the result of the condition where body fails to produce insulin. It is characterized by loss of the insulin-producing beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes tend to need insulin injection. It is also called as Insulin-dependent diabetes.

Type 2: Type 2 is the result of the condition where the cells in the body fail to use insulin properly. Before patient get this disease they many suffer from a condition called as pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition with the blood glucose level higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes: Women during pregnancy time may have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women.

Other types of diabetes include congenital diabetes which occurs because of genetic defects of insulin secretion, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, steroid diabetes induced by high doses of glucocorticoids and several forms of monogenic diabetes.
