Diseases » Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious bacterial infection. The disease affects the lungs primarily but the parts of the body may also be infected gradually. The infection can spread to other parts of the body by blood and lymph system. Pulmonary tuberculosis develops in the minority of people whose immune system does not successfully destroy the primary infection. The disease occurs within weeks after the primary infection or it may lie dormant for years before causing the disease. In pulmonary TB, the extent of disease can vary from minimal to massive involvement, but without effective therapy, the disease becomes progressive. Incomplete treatment of TB infection can contribute to the proliferation of drug resistant strains of the bacteria.
