Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, autoimmune disorder characterized by destruction of myelin (demyelization) in the nervous system of the brain and spinal cord. Myelin is the fatty substance, insulates nerves and facilitates the conduction of nerve impulses. When myelin is damage nerve impulses travel slower results in weakness, numbness, pain, and vision loss. Most patients with multiple sclerosis have a normal lifespan. |
