Scoliosis is a medical condition in which spine of person is curved from side to side. Spine supports weight and ties our body together. Spinal column consists of stack of small bones of diameter ranging from 2-3 inches to 5-6 inches. When it is viewed from front it should appear straight. Persons with scoliosis have “S” or “C” shaped curves. Types: • Idiopathic Scoliosis - it is the most common type. It is further sub-divided into following types: a. Infantile Scoliosis - this type is seen in children of 1 to 3 years old b. Juvenile Scoliosis - this type is seen in children of 3 to 10 years old c. Adolescent Scoliosis - 10 years old to skeletal maturity • Congenital Scoliosis - it is of rare type and this occurs often due to failure of formation and segmentation of spines. • Degenerative Scoliosis - it occurs in adults due to degeneration of spine with aging. • Neuromuscular Scoliosis - it occurs due to muscular weakness or neurological disorders, in this type lateral curvature of spine occurs. |
